My Relaxer Process

08:49:00

This post doesn't contain any pictures of the actual process because I'm very conscious of time when relaxing my hair, but I still hope this helps.

Relaxer Prep:

It's very important to prep your hair before relaxing it because the chemicals in a relaxer break down the protein bonds in the hair in order to straighten it, so you need to strengthen and fortify the hair before the relaxer day. This is typically done 3 - 7 days before the touch up. See This Post for my most recent relaxer prep.

The Night Before:

- Part hair into four sections, apply conditioner and petroleum jelly on previously relaxed ends.

- Detangle and part each section into smaller twisted sections and base scalp with petroleum jelly.
I do this the night before my touch up to save time.

The Day of:

- Gather all kit contents and read instructions properly before you begin.

- Perform a strand test. The strand test will help you determine the processing time for your hair and also helps you maintain an even texture if you are texlaxing.

- To begin (for a relaxer in no-lye formula), mix the activator with the relaxer creme. The activator will stimulate the relaxer creme to release your curl pattern. Continue to mix until the product becomes creamy and maintains a uniform colour. Check the bottom of the mixing bowl to see that the relaxer is thoroughly mixed. Do not use a metal bowl. (For a relaxer in lye formula, no mixing is necessary)

- Ensure your hands are protected before applying relaxer as the chemicals could hurt your hands and change the colour of your nails.

- Since hair is already sectioned from the night before, set timer based on recommended time as indicated in the instruction sheet. (Tip: I use a stopwatch instead of a timer in order to avoid pressure that comes with seeing the time counting down.)

- Apply relaxer to new growth only, starting in the most resistant areas. Leave the edges and nape for last.

- Smooth in the order that the relaxer was applied with the back of a comb or fingers. Smooth entire head, making sure not to exceed recommended time.

- Rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of relaxer, apply neutralising shampoo to hair and leave in for 1 minute before lathering and rinsing. Continue to shampoo until the foam is no longer pink and rinse thoroughly. At this point, your hair may feel like straw, but don't worry, it will be corrected.
(Optional: you can do a light protein treatment before neutralising)

- Apply deep conditioner to hair, and leave in for as long as desired, to strengthen the hair and restore softness and balance. Rinse and experience super soft hair.

- To further nourish the hair, apply regular leave in products, seal with oil and style.

And that's it! This is how I texlax my hair! I hope this post was helpful, if you have any questions leave a comment below.

Happy Texlaxing!
